Medium to large plants: adding scale and context

We added a few small cypresses around the gazebo. They have an interesting growth habit and texture, and are a little more people-friendly in terms of scale for that location. The cypresses also provide a bit of foliage near the gazebo, so that it’s not just wide open space.

Medium-sized plants can help create the illusion that there’s more space between larger elements. For example, the placement of the Japanese maple (the red plant in the foreground) helps increase depth perception from the terrace looking over toward the gazebo.
