Texas members of the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association recently volunteered at Sea Turtle Inc., a center in the state’s South Padre Island that is devoted to the rescue and rehabilitation of these creatures, as well as education and research about them.
During the trip, the professionals helped rescue a small turtle from the rocks on a jetty and a large green turtle that had been hit by a boat. They also plumbed in a new 4,500-gallon silo, which will be used to pre-treat salt water from the bay with liquid chlorine. The chlorine will be neutralized prior to filling the main silo for distribution to the various tanks in the hospital. The goal is to purify and filter the bay water so that the sea turtle “patients” can swim around in clean water.
Handy work, such as changing sand, repairing leaks, and replacing a couple backwash valves, rounded out three days of work for the volunteers. This adventure marks the 9th trip that IPSSA Texas has taken to Sea Turtles Inc. within the last four years. Their next trip is scheduled for April 2017.
