EP Minerals, makers of Celatom, CelaPool and CelaPerl filtration media, was recently acquired by an industrial minerals supplier.

U.S. Silica purchased Reno, Nev.-based EP Minerals for $750 million in a publicly traded transaction. The deal was finalized in May.

There are no major changes to leadership or product lines as a result of the acquisition, said Amy Weaver, product manager for EP Minerals.

The swimming pool industry constitutes one segment of each company’s business interests. While Katy, Texas-based U.S. Silica supplies sand for pool filters, it predominately focuses on producing commercial silica used in the oil and gas industry. It currently operates more than 25 mines and production facilities. U.S. Silica sells pool filter sand called Mystic White II.

Likewise, EP Minerals specializes in products derived from diatomaceous earth, perlite, engineered clays and non-activated clays for the filtration, additives and absorbents. It is Nevada’s largest exporter of industrial minerals by volume, according to a press statement. EP Minerals has manufacturing plants around the world.

With the companies combined, Weaver said there may be an added convenience for distributors to receive both sand and DE from the same supplier.

“We are excited to join the U.S. Silica family and contribute to their diversification strategy,” said Gregg Jones, CEO and president, in a press release.
